I had been on a Rotary Exchange in high school and then studyed extensively at University. AS a result I was fairly fluent-wouldn't say a "legend" as I think my grammar probably needs a little work, but I always understand and am always understood. I had wanted to brush up on that grammar during my year but spent most of my time studying for kanji tests....oh and having fun rather than studying!

For me languages is a great interest. Especially if I choose to stay in a country for a longer time, I really like to learn to speak the local language. Japanese was therefore a great challenge, since it is so different from our European languages. This fact merely made it more tempting...

As the whole course (6 days a week) was in Japanese, people all around you talked Japanese all day, everything is written in Japanese... you cant (dont want) to escape and learn quickly! You soon understand more than you think although it is sometimess to answer and respond quickly.

On campus I got along with English pretty well, but if you really want to experience Tokyo there is no way around Japanese. If you don't know any (like I did) you'll be busy learning it!
