Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Even if it was very expesive for me, it was relatively cheap compared with regular apartment prices in the inner city. My host university also arranged it very quickly and unbureaucraticly.

I lived in Lappi, there you have tiny apartments, with TV but no internet connection, wich you have when you choose Harustie or Pasila. You can walk within few minitues to the university, the inner city or the sea. -> best location of all student accomodations!

The problem with clubs in helsinki is that they are sometimes expensive, you also have to be over 22 to be sure to enter and they lose quite early (2h30). Nevertheless, I would recommend the Tiger (40 FIM to get in, music OK, closes at 4h). Also, Pravda: free entrance, latino music, finnish design. To have dinner, go to Zetor: not that expensive (around 80 for main course and desert), finnish dishes and strange decorations. (tractors everywhere)

i was able to improve my written english and my understanding of academic texts. concerning my finnish i was a bit disappointed that i was not in the position to improve it. but i will establish a proper "sisu" and at some time succeed in improving my finnish language skills. i got used to the pronounciation and intonation a bit more. i had to work a lot for the university so i could not dedicate time for additional language studies.

I wish I had known...
Given the powerful role of Internet in current information ear,one most important thing I wish to know before going anywhere is that, whether or not the place has an unofficial website, like www.hel.fi,that covers almost every aspect or issue that is important to outsiders of the place.

Personal recommendation
Well,I wanna recommend the university to open as many international programs as possible, which,in one way, improves its international reputation, and in the other, contributes to the development of the university by enforcing cross-cultural communications.

As I mentioned above, before going anywhere,it is practically important to know as much as possible about your destination. One way is to ask your friends who had been there before, the other way, perhaps the most effective way,is to search information in Internet. In case the above two ways did not work in practice, then one should try to somehow contact local people for information.

Personal recommendation
Well, I would strongly recommend it because the university is very welcoming and really takes care of its exchange students. Moreover, it is an opportunity to discover a very different culture. At last, if you like travelling a lot, Helsinki is a very good place to discover Russia, Sweden and Finland, of course. However, you must be aware that life is quite expensive. And that from November to February, the sun goes down very early (around 4 PM) and it is quite cold. (even if in Helsinki, the weather is nicer than in Lapland).

it was not possible to rent a laptop which is a big problem when you have to do a lot of homework on the computer. concerning saving cost on food: just do not save money to extendedly. rather buy less but to your taste, otherwise food will become boring (but this is my general opinion, does not have to do anything with finland)
