Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I moved out into my own apartment. I had a better social life and the expense was very reasonable. One down side was unreliable water and difficult to get my own phone line.

Personal comments
the new accomadation were nice, but quite a distance from town. Transporation was not flexible, though reliable and offered through the school. The food was catered but not very appetising. At the time the new President was working hard to improve the quality of food offered.

Personal spending habits
I spent less during my stay in kenya because of the strong value of the dollar $1= 50-80Shillings. This enabled me to live like a Queen and afford to do things that I couldn't afford to do in the US.

Personal comments
I would not recommned changing any significant amount of dollars to shillings in advanced. With the flucuating market it may more profitable to exchange on an an needed basis. Also, get some one (local that is trustworthy) to exchange your money on the black market. You will receive a higher return.

Overall
I wish I had known...
That it was okay to wear perfume, contrarry to medical advise given. Bring nice clothes and shoes, because there are places where you will want to dress up. don't bring any text books or electric items. They weigh too much and are cheap enough to purchase, Also you will need a converter. Most importantly: It's okay to drink (bottled) water and to eat food washed in water. following mediacl advise given by a travel nurse I didn't drink anywater for 2 months and became severely dehydrated.

Final comments
You will have to drag yourself to class for having such a great time. Be certain to go on the school trip to Mombasa and any safari trips; this discount is incredible. Use your student ID to (attempt) to get the Kenyan rates (There is a higher rate for Some foreingers.) Register your passport with the US embassey as soon as you get there. Don't wear your back pack behind you. It makes for easy pickings for would be pick-pockets. Wear it in front of you like a baby carrier! Always be alert of your surrounding. And the number one suggestion: Never give money to the glue kids. If they are truly pulling at your heart strings and they will, buy them food!
