Living in an apartment is what most of the spanish students do and so it gives the opportunity to live with native and therefore to improve the language quicker than if you are hearing it only at university and practicing it only with other foreigners

El palacio: a night club where all foreigners go, it's good but a bit expensive
Sol: very touristic part of Madrid with a lot of pubs, good but also a bit expensive
Moncloa: cheaper but with a lot of teenagers
the last one is my favourite one but I can't remember the name of this part of Madrid, it's more "special" and cheaper

Si lo hubiera sabido...
That studying in Madrid is not as easy as in the south of Spain. Most people will tell you that when you are in Erasmus, you don't have to study, it's not true. You might study less than in your country because you have less courses but the difficulty is to study in a language which is not your mother language, so it requires more time!

To choose your courses, don't base your decision only on the course description, try to ask other students which teacher to choose and ask to see how big it is first!

To find an apartment in Spain, there are ad in papers but also through the streets and at university. Try to be there by september, don't wait the beginning of the classes (october). It's easier for girls to fing than for boys.

I think that the best way to learn a language is to live in the appropriate country, so when I get to Spain, my spanish was pretty poor because I was not a very good student in Belgium. But overthere, I was living with spanish girls and so I lived Madrid with a great level!
