Alojamiento
Tipo de alojamiento: En una familia
Organizado por: Universidad de intercambio
Si volviera, eligiría: Piso o apartamento
¿Por qué?
Living with a family was an incredible experience. However, if given the opportunity to live with peers/students who were not native English speakers, our common language would have been Spanish. While my host family did not speak English, I feel as though I would have spoken more frequently if I had lived with peers.

My Spanish home stay was an amazing experience that I would not trade. The insider's view to a Spanish home, food, family unit, television programs, etc. provided me with a wealth of knowledge of the Spanish culture I would have otherwise not gained. I felt very doted upon at the dinner table (excellent food!) but never told to study or given a curfew. If these are issues that may deter prospective students wishing to study abroad...please do not let it!

I was very fortunate to live in Salamanca when it was the culture capital of Europe. There was always something interesting happening. My favorite night spots include Bar Segundo, Bar Country, Irish Rover, and Morgana. Because Salamanca is a university city there is a variety of bars and discos geared for the college student...something for everyone.

There was a definate improvement in my Spanish language and communication skills during my semester abroad. I feel as though I peaked and reached a point where I thought, counted, and dreamed in Spanish. Because my native language is English it is easy to get by without challenging oneself to become immersed in the language. I would encourage anyone wishing to learn Spanish to fully immerse him or herself. I found the best way to be socializing with the Spanish students of the university.

The cost of living in Spain is lower than in the the United States. I purchased a cell phone while living there and spent just as much each month as I do in the United States. I do not travel as much, however, than I did when I lived abroad.

Valoración global
Si lo hubiera sabido...
Although I thought I had packed lite, it wasn't lite enough. You can never pack too lite. From what others had told me, I was under the impression that weekend traveling to different countries was very inexpensive. The frequent flights, organized train and metro systems, and availibility of hostals was terrific, but inexpensive it was not. It was not a disappointment by any means, however. Instead of traveling through the countries of Europe, I traveled entirely through Spain.

Buy a framepack! Do not lug around a suitcase on wheels through the metro system or train stations. It is ultimately up to the student to immerse him/herself in the given culture. I witnessed many American students who only associated with each other, only frequented typically American bars/cafes, and traveled every weekend, which, while traveling has its benefits, were never really able to call their city "home". It is the student's responsibility to reach out to the culture to become a part of it and not feel so foreign.

If a student is studying abroad through an American program that offers classes exclusive to that program, I would encourage the student to enroll in a University course if possible. The challenge and experience was very rewarding.
