I highly recommend the Ethnolinguistics and Social Anthropology courses at the Facoltà di lettere. Also, if the historian Nicola Tranfaglia is teaching, be sure to take his course as well. The same applies for Gian Luigi Beccarias "history of the Italian language" course. I didn't take these two last courses myself, but I hear that they're good.

It's generally a big advantage to have at least a basic knowledge of the host country's language before going there... Still, it's amazing how quickly you'll learn when you're living in a full-immersion environment.

Well, the University of Torino is very big...and it's probably organized differently than what you're used to. Coping with this can be difficult in the beginning, but you'll get into it. The Italian university system has a logic of its own.

Go go go! You'll never regret it. Try to bring some extra money with you so you can travel around: the Italian railroad network is effective and inexpensive.

Well, I fixed my housing privately. I know that the university co-operates with a residence complex north of the centre for housing the international students, but it's somewhat expensive.

Don't miss the aperitivo at the Drogheria in Piazza Vittorio Veneto. It's cheap, and there's always plenty of food. You can actually have dinner there for the price of a drink! In Piazza Maria Teresa there's a nice café called Guglielmo Pepe...it's a little bit expensive, but in spring it's a wonderful place to study.
