Edinburgh is a beautiful city but be prepared for long, dark and windy winters where you are basically confined home.
Setting up a bank account requires a lot of effort and is completely useless. A money transfer is more expensive than wihdrawing money with you own card.
Try to avoid seeing a doctor there.
Try to travel as much as possible. Loch Ness is generally considered a must but St Andrews and the Highlands are also worth a visit. Glasgow is popluar for shopping but personally I did not like it at all.

Speaking english did not pose a problem for me. However, spending a year in an english-speaking environment is still a great opportunity to get even better. The Scottish dialect is difficult to understand but all teachers at uni as well as most students speak Oxford english.
