South Africa is difficult to discuss in terms of language. There are eleven official languages, with English being spoken by most people only in Durban and Cape Town. Throughout the rest of the country Afrikaans is the language most used by white peoples, and a variety of African languages being used by black africans. Add to this a mixture of Indian languages, Arabic and some different European tongues and you have a very confusing travel experience indeed. Fortunately for us monolingual Americans most South Africans speak at least three or more languages. If you really want to integrate yourself into Durban though, try taking a Zulu class. They are very difficult and require you to learn new phonetic forms, but most Zulus will be very impressed and much more liable to speak to you if you show that you have made an effort to learn their language.

Master degree of Applied Sciences in Chemistry

South Africa, Graduate
Chemistry, 2020
Overall
My research was based on the characterization of lignin yields from sugarcane bagasse pellets using two environmental friendly methods: liquid hot water and ionic liquids.
I started the first part of my research ( liquid hot water ) in Germany ( Tuhh).
Through this research I was exposed to different instruments and techniques in the laboratory.
I worked very hard. I learnt from this research how to work within the research team.
This research was successfully. The outcome of this work is the different national and international conferences I did attend to present my results.
The research work will assist to valorize the sugarcane bagasse residue .

Great university

Overall
The Pietermaritzburg campus, which is where I studied, is pretty dull if you are looking to party but it is however a conducive environment to study in and is highly recommended. The lecturers are very approachable if you need help with the course material etc. The student residences are okay but more can be done to make them great and feel more homey. The administration offices can sometimes lack urgency but overall they do their best to help students.

Pros
If you are focused you'll definitely get your degree in record time.
Cons
Outside the university walls there's a huge language so you will have to learn the native language (conversational) to get by.
