I chose to go to Chapel Hill because of its great academic standing. I wanted a real challenge and thus made sure I picked courses that really interested me and were high level and reading-intensive. I took two graduate and two undergraduate courses. I'd really given myself that challenge I was looking for and had to work harder than ever before! It was wonderful, though. Both the faculty and the course material were inspiring.

Get involved in one of the many student associations (NOT fraternities/ sororities) on campus; it's the best way to meet the locals fast and there's often fun opportunities to travel with these groups. Chapel Hill also offers many free lectures by visiting scientists, writers, etc. These are very much worth visiting!

On campus housing cost quite abit more than my apartment at home. There really aren't any cooking facilities in the dorms, so students go out for food much more than at home; naturally that is more expensive. The night life in Chapel Hill doesn't begin to compare to Groningen, so I spent much less on going out. On the other hand, I spent much more on travel because I wanted to see as much of the US as possible while I was there.

Most central to all university facilities. Also, living on campus works very stimulating academically.

I was placed in the oldest and nicest dorm on campus, which was also very centrally located. Although all rooms were shared, as is standard practice in the US, I had a relatively large room and so still had my own space.

There was a great Jazz cafe, called Henry's, which had life music every Tuesday. There were many international students but also many Americans. The atmosphere was always great, very laid back. Chapel Hill also has a host of wonderful, slightly alternative, privately owned (no chains!) lunch cafe's and coffee houses.
