The academic strike was a surprise and required increased spending. As there were no classes it was best to enjoy the city and country. It would work out cheaper to move off of campus and live in a shared house, this would also give greater eating options and enable full enjoyment of the city.

I wish I had known...
I wish I had known about the unsettled state of University/teaching staff relations. After the strike was suggested it bacame apparant that there was a history of disputes, which was well known in the local community.

Make sure there is no talk of a strike. If there is do your best to carry on the work, but don't miss the opportunity to get out and enjoy yourself on Toronto or Canada because its a wonderful place to be.

Final comments
Get involved in as many campus activities as possible. It's not as central to the city as may first appear so make the most of the social events/sports on campus and with the friends made enjoy the city (many of the campus bars were shut Friday-Sunday!!).

I am sure that I the academic life I experienced was unfortunate and did not truely represent the University. This is not due to quality issues but rather during my year long exchange there was an academic teaching strike which closed down the campus for 13 weeks and threatened the academic year. As such I had no lessons during this period, no assessment and had to rely on my own motivation to pass. Several of my freinds had to repeat the year or failed upon returning to their home institution due to this experience

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I would rather live off campus and commute in, as the campus was not on the metro train system and further away from the city, with its employment/facilities/nightlife than I expected.

Accommodation with sufficient catering facilities were lacking, I applied and paid for self catering and got 6 people sharing a hotplate that could not even boil water. There was also a lack of healthy eating options and affordable food in the general store. Otherwise the facilities were modern and suited to study.

I loved the music and relaxed social scene of Toronto. Grossmans was an amazing bar to check out local jazz/rock/blues and the gypsy co-op had a cool vibe.
