The currency difference does play a role. I would spend as much time going out to eat than I did at home. Furthermore, because I traveled more abroad than I did at home, I spent more there. The Nightlife scene was about equal.

Cell phones, dinning out, or renting a house for the weekend were outrageously cheap. A weekend here I could spend $40, where in the US I could easily spend $200 on the same activities
