they don't tell you about the constant presence of the the military armed gaurds that you have to deal with every day. They don't tell you about the random searches. Also it was sort of a challenge to with people who had very negative views of America. As a political science major and a middle east specialist its hard to deal with the the disenting opinion because they way I figured it is... I'm not the person you should be mad at because I made the attempt to understand you culture and ways its the people who don't branch out and stay in their bubble that I have aproblem with as well as you do. You will be constantly challenged daily by the isuues facing people who can't stand you for a various reasons. Its hard and there are down periods but they try to cover this in oreintation.

Good school, great enviroment.. but its not for everyone. you have to already have a back bone especially if your a women and be able to tolerate just about anything because its crazy some times. There are local enviroment issues such has harrrasment and filth that it takes time getting use to. you can walk down the street and see at least 5 dead cats or rodents and no one disposes of these things.. So you have to get use to being in a 3rd world country. Bugs are a big reality as well as nasty men on the street groping you.. But with all that going on you still manage to have a great time.

Most helpful thing I could suggest is, take some pepper spray, because it will deter the vagabonds... Never ever walk the streets alone at night. Always have a boy crew who you hang out with ragularly in the city and especially in Zamalek if you choose to live inthe dorms, because this will be your saving grace because most men will think that they are you cousins or husband or what ever and they will not approach you. People don't steal there so you don't have to worry about theft. traveling just be constantly aware of your surrounding at all times. You have to keep you head about your self, it is important never to be too offensive. I would suggest if you drink to do it at some ones home instead of in public because you need your full sense and faculties at all times to even get a cab or you may end up in the dessert some where... well maybe not that drastic but you get the point. Your arrival into Cairo is an adventure unto itself, the airport smells like livestock so be prepared to be sick. After a few weeks you get use to the smell and don't notice it. My group of friends coinded the phase " the Cairo stench" whcih consists of dead carass, garbage and of course the smells of the Nile... and just the general filth. The biggest suggestion I can give is take clothes you don't want to wear ever again because Mom will burn them when you get home. The smell of Cairo tends to stay with you even when you get back. Your fiends and family will notice it immediatly. Til this very day a good friend of mine who I met in Cario, he's mother still ask what in the world were you guys doing over there rolling around with the animals.. She threw all his clothes away as did my mother as did all the other the mothers... So believe me when I tell you the stench sticks, in your hair and pores. It takes about a week to get rid of it. Good Luck and have fun!

Girls- be careful. Egyptian men can be pigs sometimes... there will be bad experiences, but for the most part everyone is wonderful. The biggest thing is that AUC is not always looking out for YOUR best interest. DO NOT let them push you around, and GO TO YOUR EMBASSY FIRST!!!! Your embassy will help you solve your problems to your best advantage while AUC will be worried whether or not they're image will be tarnished. DO NOT LET TOMADER PUSH YOU AROUND!!!! Don't expect Egypt to be like the US- but its an amazing experience!

Go, because this is the most American friendly university in the city- because English is widely spoken and everyone is very WESTERN! But, like I said, AUC will not always be looking after your best interests. Be in touch with your embassy and if something happens, have your embassy help- DO NOT let AUC boss you AROUND AND "TAKE CARE" of you- your embassy will help you. The International Student Office is a joke... but Cairo is an amazing city and no problems I had with AUC could taint my time in CAIRO!

ENJOY!!!! CAIRO IS SO AMAZING! YOU WILL HAVE AN AMAZING TIME IF YOU KEEP AN OPEN MIND AND ARE OPEN TO DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES AND PEOPLE! KEEP YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR EVEN WHEN YOU WANT TO BE BACK HOME SO MUCH IT HURTS... IF YOU GET SO HOMESICK YOU CANT MOVE- BOOK A HOTEL ROOM AT THE HILTON OR MARRIOT! ITS A GREAT WAY TO RELAX AND "GET OUT" OF EGYPT WITHOUT LEAVING. Besides- talking to all the tourists who wouldn't dream of leaving the hotel not in a charter bus will be so amazed with your bravery! Its a great way to put things in perspective.

I was well acquainted with the Arab world because I had lived in Syria the year before, so Egypt did not represent a big change for me.

I studied two different things at American University in Cairo. First, I was at the Arabic Language Insitute (ALI) studying Arabic for a year. I loved their method of teaching Arabic as a second language and most professors are absolutely great. During the summer, I took two courses in Economics (Micro and Macro) while I have no complaints about professors, I do have a lot to say regarding AMerican University administration. The application process was a mess, nobody seemed to be responsible for anything, long lines would form at the registration office, and I almost missed important deadlines because I was misinformed. Whoever is going to take classes at AUC, please make sure that that you start all application process with enough lenght of time because the university is pretty caothic internally.

The American University in Cairo provided me with a high-standard level of education. For the most part, the professors are highly proficient, especially in the humanities courses that I particularly focused on. The journalism courses are extraordinary and it really broadened my horizons.

I attended the university's old campus, however the new campus is a sight to see! It is a huge campus with many amenities for students studying there.

I would highly recommend this university to anyone coming to Cairo from abroad to study and learn arabic at the same time!
