Haidian district is a great place for students. It is easy to make friends and there are plenty of places to hang out at. I personally like going to Space for Imagination.

It is very difficult in the few several weeks as locals usually cannot speak a single word of English. It gets better after that, and it is a great environment to learn Mandarin.

Calling overseas is still very pricey and I spent more on housing in order for me to live at the same level of standard as I would in Australia or Holland.

While locals are friendly, be careful that they don't increase the prices just because you are a foreigner!
