Most universities allow you to teach english as a student. You can make anywhere from $30-50 an hour doing this. Try not to eat out a lot and keep your partying to a minimum(3 nights a week) and you should be alright

Because I already spoke pretty good Japanese so I didn't need to be with a host family. It also allowed me to do the things that I wanted to.
