Personal spending habits
The all-including housing on campus was a little more expensive than the private flat sharing at home. The telephone only ran over phone cards or mobile phone. Nightlife is more expensive, depending on where one is going (hardly any concession for Opera tickets etc.). Travelling on a trip to Central Australia organised by the university was cheaper than travelling individually and a great experience and opportunity to meet other students, local and international.

Depending on where you come from, you might just have to adjust to a different academic life and university system. It is however well worth the experience, even if some difficulties might occur. Staff is always friendly and more than willing to help at any time.

I did not have any trouble except for very few instances when people had an extremely heavy Australian accent. One gets used to it quite soon though.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: A room exchange
Why?
The Melbourne Campus of Deakin University is about 45 min. from the city centre (by tram). I would have preferred a location a little closer to the city.

Personal comments
Compared to what is customary at my home university, students in Australia living in so-called "student villages" on campus are usually first-year students and thereby a few years younger - at an age where even 2-3 years are sometimes crucial to one's behaviour. However, the atmosphere in general was very good, though interests among the students living in the same house were very different.

Personal comments
Northern Melbourne with its mediterranean influence was a nice place to go out, also in the late afternoon. - Very beautiful is the promenade by the Yarra River opposite Flinders Station. - The Opera and the Ballet as well as the Theatre (St Kilda Road) are always worth a visit.
