I spoke mostly French at home and with teachers and assistants. Since most social activities I attended were organized specifically for exchange students, I spoke a lot of English in these situations.

Expenses
Main source of funding:
Government assistance
Other sources of funding:
Family
An ERASMUS grant
A private grant
Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options
Personal spending habits
I didn't make as many phone calls as at home. I mainly used SMS and instant messaging due to the price levels. The food and the housing was more expensive than in Sweden. Since I wanted to see as much of the country as possible, I spent a lot of money on traveling.

Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
A lot of student activities are organized, especially for exchange students. Attend as many of them as possible. This way you will learn how the university works, you will get to know other students and you will get many recommendations on what to do and see in school and in Switzerland.

Academic
Course recommendations
There were many courses to choose from. Most were in French, but many Master courses were in English. I especially enjoyed the database courses and Multimedia Documents. The department for Management of Technology and Entrepreneurship had many interesting courses. I also atended two courses at HEC Lausanne, the city's business school. I strongly recommend doing that as their courses are interesting and you get to know students outside your own university.

Personal comments
There were too few laboratory sessions. Out of the 13 courses I took, only three had lab work. Many courses should have contained more exercise session.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
I shared an apartment with two Swiss people, which was a great way to practice my French. However, I would like to get to know more students, especially ones from other schools and programs.

Personal comments
The university does not own any housing complexes. However, it advertises offers from people who rent out rooms or apartments. This solution works well. One can also find many offers posted on boards around the campus. Another great way to find housing is to consult the different student and housing websites.

Personal comments
There are many good places to go dancing, especially MAD, D Club and The Loft. Some nice bars are Café Luna and Jet Lag. There are some cool concerts at Casino de Monbenon. The Fête de la Cité in the old town in July should not be missed.
