Personal spending habits
Switzerland is a very expensive country. Food is more expensive. You usually buy a pre-paid phone card, which is also more expensive than a regular contract. Housing is more expensive, even student residences are very expensive compared to Germany. The entry to nighlife locations is very high and the drinks as well. If you have a car, there shouldn't be a big difference between Switzerland and Germany, but if you are using public transport it is more expensive.

To travel one should buy the so called demi-tarif including the voie 7, which lets you travel for free with trains after 7 pm.

Final comments
Lausanne is a perfect place to start you travel trips. The next airport (Geneve) is only 1 hour away by train. You can visit France easily by taking the boat across the lake. Going skiing is easy even by train you can get anywhere in the alps. In the summer you will find very nice beaches at the lake and the water is clean.

Languages
Language of instruction: French
Was learning French a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your French?
My level before: Did not speak it
My level after: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
The school also offers courses in English, if you don't speak the language at all. Still the courses in French are twice a week and after an intensive course before the school starts, you'll have learned a pretty good basis.

Personal comments
The student cafe satellite is a nice place to hang out during breaks or even at night, due to a lot of cultural activities. Lausanne has several clubs with different types of music. House clubs are pretty expensive, but you'll also find student places, where it is not that expensive, e.g. Blue Lezard.
