Where do I start!? ;-) In these regions of Atlanta are awesome places to go out: Midtown, Buckhead, Decatur, Virginia Highlands and Little Five Points. IN Midtown: Loca Luna, Eleven50, Vision, Twisted Taco, Leopard Lounge; IN Buckhead: Tounge n' Groove; OUTSIDE the usual regions: Compound. There is a big variation of Restaurants. My favorites: Silk (Midtown), Fountain's (Virginia Highland). Nice cafes can be found in Decatur and Virginia Highland. Sports: Don't miss an Atlanta Braves baseball and a Georgia Tech college football game! Shopping: Lenox Mall!

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
I lived on CLAIRMONT Campus (I therefore cannot comment on other campus dorms and/or facilities on Emory Campus), which was newly built two years ago and has a great state-of-the-art Activities and Academics Center with everything from an Olympic-size pool up to a fitness center

Since my English was already quite good when I came to the US I did not expect any grand improvement, but I was disabused and learned that there is always an improvement possible. I surely learned at least one new word per day (academic and slang). This means I memorized 120 new words at the least!!!

Personal spending habits
Food: 1. Lived at home back home, 2. Food is overall more expensive in the US than in Austria, especially cheese, cold cut and produce. Telephone: Conventional telephone network within Atlanta is free, only non-Atlanta and cell-phone-calls cost extra. Housing: 1. Lived at home back home, 2. Campus dorms are not cheap! Travel: Hardly travel at home; abroad I wanted to travel as much as possible.

Personal comments
Surprises: Books are really expensive. Savings: 1. When traveling with plane: Book way ahead, flights are almost always cheaper then and use websites like www.expedia.com, 2. Try to get second hand books, 3. Bank: Bank of America: Free students account, only big cost there (so beware): withdrawal costs 2$ every time, so try to withdrawal money as often as possible from bank facility itself (no cost).

I wish I had known...
No, I was perfectly informed. But a few friends of mine had to find out the hard way, that the housing office at Emory sets a high value on a perfectly cleaned apartment at the end of the stay, by paying a quite high fine. So make sure your room is clean!

Final comments
I seriously had the time of my life: academic and social-wise. Emory is a great university with state-of-the-art facilities and wonderful teachers. I learned more in these four months than I did in the past 4 years. The campus is absolutely beautiful. Atlanta is maybe not the greatest city to be as a tourist, but for living it is a great place: good infrastructure, awesome nightlife, nice shopping malls, very friendly people. Travel tips in Georgia itself: Savannah; Other than that, if you have the possibility: Miami, New Orleans, Washington D.C., New York, New England region. Helpful advice: Don't be shy to ask people for help, the Georgians are every friendly people.
