Packed with opportunities to excell

Indonesia, Undergraduate
Engineering, Mechanical, 2018
Overall
The mechanical engineering study program in Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia offers a variety of opportunities to excel both in hard- and soft-skills. Academic-wise, the lecturers are very helpful and only seek the best for their students. However, competition among fellow students are also prominent, hence one has to present themselves the best they can.

Personal spending habits
Food is less expensive than at home, but whereas you will always go out for dinner it will cost you more than at home. Housing can be really cheap, but if you pay the same as at home you can have an incredible house with your own swimming pool and housekeeper. Cheap airlines are flying from yogya.

Personal comments
In the end you will spend lots of money. Most things are not expensive, but you will always go out for dinner, play pool regularly or go to the cinema. If you want to save costs, try to find cheap housing, rent a motorbike (semi-automatic), eat at places with local food, and hang out with local people.

You do not need to bring a sweater and rent a motorbike as fast as possible!

I really loved my stay here, but it is possible that some other people are disappointed. The culture is different from western countries, which might be difficult for some people. I am sure you will love it to if you find a nice house and make friends with people with the same mindset (usually other international students).

SWin Burne needs to support the International community to have some kind of work experience atleast for 12 weeks, else whats the use of a student spending $ 20000 to 30000 for just a degree with no work internship to support him to look for a job!!!!!!! Cmon you need to give better than this foer the fees the international student pays.

Housing
Type of housing: Homestay
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Boarding House
Why?
The Pondok Bugenvil is very comfortable, clean and nice. The price is also still acceptable, though very expensive for Indonesia (~100 Euro/month)

At MM-UGM (Master of Management) you have to arrange the accomodation on your own. It's best to do it there with the help of an existing exchange student or Indonesians.

The nightlife in yogya is not the best, but it is possible to have a crazy night. Nightlife is generally expensive in Indonesia. To spend less money you should either go to a bar, or in yogya to liquid. Liquid is a club mainly for undergraduate students, and offers a beer for 25.000 IDR (bottle 600ml Carlsberg).
