Most of the dutch people can speak English very well and thus it was never a problem for me to communicate through it there. However, most of the students that I needed to work with had worse English skills than I did, so I needed to adapt to that.

Almost any Dutch you meet speaks English, some even German. There were no problems at all. To learn Dutch was just for fun. The Dutch course offered by the university was not enough for acquiring a good knowledge of the language.

Everybody in A;dam speaks English but when socialising it was important to understand others, but came into contact with people from all over the world so English was the main language spoke in the mainstream
