Try tol share an apartment with others so you can share the expenses. Eat at the university canteens or some other places like that..cook home if you can..I don't because I am lazy to go to the big supermarkets..yes...try to buy things from those places..like TEsco or Cora..visit in the market at MArs Tér may also be useful

Languages
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your English?
My level before: No problems in any areas (including slang)
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
A broad variety of "Lern Hungarian"-courses were offered. The teachers were mainly young, motivated and excellent in their jobs.
To communicate with the locals was 50/50. The younger generation could speak appropriate english, the ones who grew up in the communist area could only understand Hungarian (sometimes German) - but in almost ever everyday situations the "hand-and-feet"language worked pretty good.

The danger here is that you end up speaking English with other foreign students but luckily I have had the opportunity to practise also my Hungarian. Not everybody here speaks English so it is good to know some basics for example when dealing with officials like post offices, shops etc...People are very friendly to help...at least in most places..:-)

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Enough place for other students to live with. If you want it quiet, you can have it quiet. If you want to have a party, you can have one.

The costs are pretty low, in gerneral I would say it is about 2 3rd of the normal accomodation costs compared to a student city in Germany.
It is very rare, but it happens: some of the land-lords are not quite honest. Check the contract (and if possible the reputation) of a land lord with a local.
