Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
To get some psychological distance. To have your own room because most on campus dorms only have two people rooms. If you want your own bathroom you should live off campus, too.

I live in Foxhill townhomes. Basically, all off-campus accomodation mean you share an appartment with 4 people. The bus take you to campus twice every hour. Rooms are equipped with basic necesities.

There is basically 5 bars you can go to. There are no dance clubs here in the traditional sense!!! But there are places where you can dance. Party mostly take place in peoples homes. Harrisonburg is not the place to go wild but you can have fun if you want to. If you like big city life, dont go to Harrisonburg, you would not like it.

Personal recommendation
This is a small town. You wont have a car so you are pretty much stuck. But friends can take you out to washington dc or places in the area. You might wanna live on-campus if you are worried.

JMU is ok. Studies are not too hard, you will have a good amount of free time. However, I found it actually hard to fill that time. I worked out a lot. They have great sports facilities (www.jmu.edu/recreation). If you like life in bigger cities, dont go to JMU, particularly if you stay more than one semester.

You can open an account for free on campus where there are also ATM machines to get cash. You can cash in your travellers' cheques, too.

You can participate in classes. Some are actually as small as 15 people, some as big as 200. Americans are very open. It is not difficult to make contact.
