Wow this is so hard to pick as there are many places that I would say not to be missed. Wednesday nights at Frostbites on Chapel Stin South Yarra were always a good time. It was backpacker night so there were cheap drinks and there was a good cover bar. If you want a good dance club I would recommend going to Spy Lounge on King St in the city. For a good bar to relax and have a few drinks at would be E 55 on Elizabeth St. Flinder's lane has "heaps" of fun places to go out. You also cant miss the many hidden alley bars like Honkey Tonks that give Melbourne so much character.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
It would have been easier from the beginning to stay on campus as I would have had a place to live right away. I had heard that Monash's dorms were small and far from the city, so I opted to stay in a hostel until I found a place to live. I stayed in a hostel for 2 weeks before finding a 14 bedroom house in South Yarra. I enjoyed staying in the hostel as I met many many people from all over the world, and I liked my house in South Yarra because it was pretty close to the city and everything you needed was close by.

I had friends that stayed in the dorms at Monash. They are tiny and about an hour by public transport to the city. They all seemed to meet only American students and hang out with only Americans so to me it seemed to lessen their experience abroad.

Academic
Course recommendations
I would recommend Contemporary Australia for international students. It was a great way to learn about Australia, and meet other international students. The course was relatively easy, and Jeff Jarvis the instructor was awesome. Other then that I can't say I did very well in my other classes. It was my own fault because I always seemed to let my social life take priority over my academic one! There is always something to do, and since its not every day that you get to go to Australia I wanted to have as much fun as I could. If I went back I would try to do better in my classes as it is very expensive to study there.

We werent assesed much throughout the semester. Your grades mostly depend on assesment at the very end. Thats something that Im not used to. I don't want to blame the University though, because its my own fault that I put everything off until the end.

I spoke english so communication was very easy to me. It took a little while to get used to the slang, but that was part of the fun.

I wish I had known...
I wished I had known how easy it was to travel around in hostels and meet people, because I was really scared about it before I left.

Its a little far from the city but overall my experiences there were good. The study abroad administration there is great and very helpful! I never experienced any problems but I know if I did I could have counted on them to help me there.

Final comments
To sum it up, my experience in Melbourne was by far the best experience of my life. I learned sooo much, became very much more independent, and overall had a great time. Before I went over there I had never met anyone else from another country. I now can say I have good friends from all over the world and the US... Especially Australia and England. Australia is a beautiful country. I toured the entire east coast and loved it. I would highly recommend Byron Bay, and the Whitsunday Islands. and of course i LOVED melbourne, its an incredible city! All in all I had an incredible time and wouldnt trade my time that I spent there for anything in the world!! If anyone wants any advice or anything at all feel free to contact me, as I would be more than happy to help you guys with anything!!

Personal spending habits
I ate out a lot so I spent more on food. Cell phones are ridiculous over there. It costs about 40 US cents per minute to call within Australia-even to call someone that lived down the street from me. It was much cheaper to call the US than any of my friens in Australia. I went out a lot more there than I do @ home so of course I spent more on nightlife. I traveled a lot in the little time that I was there so I spent a lot on that. I Just wanted to have fun so I really didnt care how much I was spending. I am definitely paying for it now that I am back at home and in debt..but it was definitely worth every penny that I spent.

I pretty much knew going into it that I was going to spend quite a bit of money so there were no surprises. The only reason I wont give this a good rating is because I am in debt now!!
