Interesting finance courses but somewhat dismay in fundamental ones

4.0/5
Overall
Courses are structured in such a way that first provides the students with necessary fundamental knowledge and then immerse them in the more advanced and up-to-date finance knowledge.

First semester starts with mathematics, econometrics, and asset pricing. Other business courses are included such as microeconomics and business ethics. Then the second and fourth semesters are when the students dwell in more complicated and specific focuses in finance such as Investments, Valuation, Risk Management, and Portfolio Management.

The core courses in finance are all very good, the materials are up-to-date, and most of the professors are academically and professionally excellent with in-depth knowledge in their field. However, the basic courses are led by not very good professors when they fail to provide justifiable reasons in grading.

Academic structure of the two-year master program is set so it's not possible to shorten to the program if one wishes to. Furthermore, it is worth noted that BI is a private school with tuition of roughly USD11,000 per year.

Overall, BI provides finance students with the most updated knowledge in finance, from M&A finance to asset management.

They are doing a great job, but maybe they could consider being a bit more flexible, as mentioned at one of the above points of this review.

My advice is to go ahead and try it, you will figure it out on the way. Just keep in mind you will need a considerable grant or any other private funds to be able to cover even the most basic expenses (accommodation, transportation, books, food).

My experience at BI was very interesting because I had the opportunity to know people from different cultures and also to know more about the life in Norway. The academic experience in not always the main point but also the interaction with different people makes it an unforgettable experience and friends.

As for travels from Norway, it is every easy and fairly cheap to go to Sweden and Denmark. You can choose any kinds of transportations to get there.

I think the university itself is good, but the culture and the country itself brings a lot to the product and experience of the university. Beside the study program which had to be very near my expectations and ides (and it is!), everything is offered here, you just have to enjoy it, study, not worry how to aquire the basing studying resources... You can choose and organize your self beautifully, and in that the university makes an important role.

It is important to assess the university before you seriosly consider it, and that you can do through the communication process with the university. It has been shown to be a good indicator. If everything is a problem, the mails are not replied within a reasonble time, you have to put in a lot of energy to get basic information, they do not have nechanisms to for example find housing, organize health care, contact with embassis - they probably do not take good care of foreigh studets.

All courses were taught in English and this was no problem for me because I had already completed many courses in English at my home university. The Norwegian courses offered at the Handelsh°yskolen BI are for beginners. Also the "advanced" course! After three semseters of (not very intensely) studying Norwegian in Switzerland I had to recognize that I learnt definitely more by playing ice hockey on Frognerstadion with Norwegians. This was also the best way to meet Norwegians. I met my best Norwegian friends there and we always communicate in Norwegian (E-Mails, when visiting each other). I have reached a level where I can easely and fluently communicate with Norwgians and read Norwegian literature.
