Personal spending habits
The introductiuon of the dollar has turned Ecuador from being one of the cheapest countries to Latin America to one of the most expensive. Foreigners are unfairly charged nearly double for charges like Hotels, Flights, Entry to National Parks.
Didn't save as much as I had hoped.

Make sure you apply for a student visa before you enter the country, which means you'll get a residence permit and you won't have to pay the foreigner rates.

Overall
I wish I had known...
How La Catolica would refuse me access to many services (ie, sport and social facilities, computer facilities, evenb being refused a student card!) simply because I was an 'independent' student and not an 'official' intercambio student. How foreigners have to pay much more for certain costs. The INACCURACY of travel guides especially the one most people read!

In my opinion:
Stay home.
Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
Ifr you're an 'independent' student (not on an official intercambio programme - do NOT attend this university. They'll discriminate against you!!

During my experience abroad, I ...
(1) Never – (4) A lot
Became familiar with another culture
Met people from other countries
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies & career
Final comments
Make sure you know ALL the facts before you enrol in a foreign university (my biggest mistake!).
I would like to say that in spite of my many difficulties at La Catolica, the majority of the tutors and students were friendly and helpful.

Languages
Language of instruction: Spanish
Was learning Spanish a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your Spanish?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
Languages courses at La Catolica INCREDIBLY expensive in comparison to the the local language schools.
Most of the improvement in my Spanish came from classes in a private language school. As I could afford to take more classes there.
