As I was already speaking italian upon my arrival in the country, i did not have problems. However, the ease in using the language and the sense of the spoken language that i now have would have been difficult to obtain otherwise.

Avoid touristical cafes and places. Rome is an expensive city, but you can round it. Sitting in a piazza's cafe will most likely cost you a lot, but there are lots of places that charge almost normal prices. The same goes for restaurants and similar places.
