I think it was a good experience because i got to know more about japanese culture and had the chance to talk to japanese people and therefore improve my japanese skills. Also it was interesting and fun to meet other foreign students that were in my same situation and could learn how to live with other cultures. It also measured my ability of adaptation in other environment.

Housing
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
Living with a japanese family is very interesting and rewarding. Of course it is challenging because communication is difficult, but we learn a lot about the culture and way of living as we are able to really implicate in the daily life. And of course language skills improve quickly.

We can choose between living in an independant flat, in a dormitory or with a family. Anyway, it is very expensive. I believe one should choose the family if he wants to learn as more as possible.

Tokyo is a very interesting city. The best night spots to learn about japanese culture is Shinjuku but if you want to be with foreigns the best place is Roppongi. There are a lot of places to go in japan, since is a country of consumer. Coffee shops all around the country, as well as convinience stores. There are other amazing places in Tokyo, such as Harajuku where there are a lot of young people and Shibuya where you can appreciate the big screens in the street.

japanese language is long and difficult to learn, yet really interesting. I had studied it in France before going to japan but it was still difficult to speak and efficiently communicate. I learnt more by studying and living in japan than during 3 years in France ! It the end of the stay I was able to well understand and to express myself, and I could even make jokes ! I am glad I went to Japan.

The main reason of my interest to go to Japan was the language. I studied before japanese in an especial school also in Japan before starting university. English language was very important for me as well since it is the universal language. I was able to improve both languages during the year i lived in Tokyo and I think it turned into a very powerful tool for my future professional life.

The life in Sophia is unique in terms of interaction with international students, various cultures, and the students can get in touch with the OB and OG who work at international organization like UN or those kind of sectors. At that point, Sophia is opened to global and also it has a mind of regarding local as essential thing.
