My Russian was very basic before going to St-Petersburg. The course was very good at giving us the grammar base as well as some everyday vocabulary (we even went to the market with our tutors!. The tutors were aware that we would make most progress by meeting Russians, so often said "You will learn more if you spend the night meeting Russian people than in the hour of seminar that you've missed becasue you went out"

Due to budget cuts and other factors, the Russian department at my home University is suffering greatly, with one professor of Russian for all four years. This lack of diversity in instructors is sorry. But the professors and administrators at the Russian university were amazingly kind, generous, and over all willing to help us out in any situation.

Within the university and with the other participants in the summer school I spoke mostly English, but in the City and in all other areas I had to speak Russian, which helped me to learn the language pretty fast.

The school was not proficient in teaching the language for international students. There was no evaluation to place the students, no training for different skills such as writing, reading, speaking or listening. The teachers were making of students who are trying to speak the language.
