I wish I had known...
I wish I would have known how hard it would be to readjust to living in the US when I got home. Other than that I loved everything about Italy and learning about the culture.

Syracuse University is great because it is a small school and offers very personal attention to its students. They have a large variety of trips to take their students on and set up a very cozy student center for everyone to meet, study, and talk. If you ever had a problem you knew you could talk to someone at the school and they would help you take care of it. I would highly recommend anyone to this program.

My best advice is to always be open to trying new things. When I was abroad I did things that I never would have done in the US and it made my experience so much better. You do have to be careful because crime still occurs overseas (I got my bag stolen in the last 2 weeks of my stay). Do as much as possible in the time you are there because its an experience you can never fully get back. The food is delicious, the people are friendly and the country is beautiful. Just enjoy!

Learnt to become independent.Interact with people from various walks of life and various cultures as they will teach you more than anything you learn in a classroom.Follow your own pace.

I wish I had known...
How absolutely necessary it is to have a WARM jacket, good shoes, and a bike or car. I also wish I had done more research BEFORE going to the U.S. about housing, etc. through the students themselves. Don't rely on the university since it will lure you to commit irrevocably to expensive on-campus housing. Ask the student listservs or international office for advice. Network even before you get to Syracuse. It will save you huge trouble and $$ in changing your contract if you find cheaper housing.

Socialize more, esp. at the Masters level since grades aren't as important as actually completing the prestigious program. This socialzing is very valuable. It is networking and it will get you a job. Attend ALL events, network network network and always follow-up way before graduation.

It snows a lot in Syracuse. The rigth clothes are NOT heavy sweaters. Get medium/light clothes for indoors and bundle up heavily when going out, i.e. get a good jacket and scarf/mittens. For those coming from a warm climate, here's a tip about mittens. You need the thick ones. Get the closed mittens not the ones with separate fingers since it traps heat more. There are ones that will let you expose your finger-tips for tricky handling jobs. Also, a car will help you discover Syracuse and the area better. Buses are god, but you're limited. If you can, get a car! Onandaga Lake, Beaver Lake, Thousand Islands, the wineries, football games, b-ball games...

MAke sure that you are aware of the positives and the less so when you are choosing the university. With Maxwell school in Syracuse you will get the best education and you will probably like the atmosphere in the school. Do not expect a terribly interesting city and be ready for a challenging winter time.
