The best in Germany is to live in a WG with other students, and spend the weekends travelling because the group train tickets are very cheap.

The bierstube at olympia dorf is a nice place to have dinner, hangout with CHEAP beer. Cafe Muenchner Freiheit is an excellent place for ice-cream and people watching.
