Excellente université

Overall

My German experience

Germany, Graduate
Food Science and Technology, 2021
Overall
Basically, I am a master student at the free university of Bolzano in Italy. I applied for an exchange program to the technical university of Munich to continue my specialization in food packaging. I also got an offer for a master thesis working on a new technology for food pasteurization at the technical university of Munich. I am having the best experience of my life especially after discovering the level of the German education. I am willing to improve my knowledge in that field especially that is impacting our environment by all the food waste.

Competent, but not personal
Julian H
Germany, Undergraduate
Engineering, Computer, 2023
Overall
I chose the TUM most of all because of its high ranking and reputation and also because it is quite near to where I live.
There were many interesting courses and especially for research I suppose it offers very wide opportunities. Though, during my Computer Science bachelor's I often missed personal interaction and practical experience. Besides my studies I worked as a working student. What practical experience I gained there I cannot compare to what I have learned during my studies. Still, both complemented each other very well, as the studies provided my with a basic overview about Computer Science, so that made it easier to learn and order new knowledge from the practical experience from work.

I suppose every bachelor studies are quite general and the more interesting parts come during master's, so working alongside makes good sense anyway.
For my studies I would have wished for more interaction, just like I was used to from school. At TUM, not only during Covid, a lot is remote or even on-site rather distant because it is such a huge university. But on the other hand, lectures being recorded or livestreamed also had a lot of advantages and provided flexibility.
Still, I almost never had personal contact with a professor (at least for questions right after the lecture when on-site).

I would say, if you do not mind working on your own, if you like flexibility and "home-study", or if you are really motivated for research and proactive engangement, TUM might be right for you. Your degree will have great reputation, though for that you probably have to accept worse grades compared to studying at a german "Hochschule" for example.

Pros
Very flexible, big university with lots of opportunities and a great reputation
Cons
almost no interaction with profs, quite little practical experience, I also did not learn so many skills actually needed in jobs, just a little Java, C and C#, but nothing like Webdevelopment, Data Science, Software Engineering only very little...
