Ratios of costs of living are simply different between the US and Spain. I have also taken advantage of my location to other European treasures this year, and have travelled while I can. Social experiences are also vital to my continued learning of Spanish and to making my stay memorable. For this, I have indulged more in the nightlife than I otherwise would in California.

I would always budget more than what you think that you will need - this way when any unique travel or experience opportunities arrise, you may take advantage of them.

Less, although this was in 2001, before the Euro took over and the rise in inflation. Now, considering I would be paying with American Dollars, the exchange rate would be a killer.

The communication facilities are more expensive here nad they are quiet fundamental for youre social life locally and at home. The prices of housing have increased by more than a 100% in madrid in the last years. Travels were low budget and therefore afordable.

Cost of living is a bit less here than at home. In housing it's a lot less, but also worse quality. I spent more on travel because I traveled a lot more than usual. The telephone system is bad here and I find cell phones and land lines to be very expensive.
