I think, I would have preferred to live in my favorite barrio in Madrid, which is Malasaña. It´s really cheap and you get some nice flats, plus there are so many cool shops and bars within walking distance from your doorstep. Although the area I lived in was pretty cool and close to school.

Well the University of Madrid is the biggest University of Spain. So most students live in flats off campus. It can be tough searching for a flat, especially when your not quite native in the language and your not quite familiar with the area in which you want to live in. But with time and patience you can find one that is inexpensive and nice. But it´s best to look before other students arrive in the season, because it becomes much more difficult after that. And some owners, don´t feel confident in renting to international students.

The experience I had has been very positive, starting from the fact that you visti lots of places and people to try to find the best place for you. Being in a shared appartment allows you to have enough personal space and tranquility, and help in the case of need, from the people with whom you live.

I did at frist have an University appartment for Erasmus students, but I chose not to take it when I saw that: the rooms were extrmely small and in bad conditions;no natural light in the appartment;old furniture and its loctaion, quite far from the campus.

I shared an apartment with other erasmus students, we founded it so the price, localization etc. was exacly that we wanted.

There is a special office that deals with the housing matters for erasmus students. If you want them to find a room for you, you have to apply for it and pay for it long long time in advance and actually the localization and 'conditions'of the apartment are not up to you. That's why I decided to look for a place to live independently with some erasmus friends.

I think that, particularly for Americans who study abroad through a program, it's best to arrange your own housing to better benefit from having to function completely independently. You choose the location and with whom you live, and also have the freedom that is lacking with homestays.

I found a group called EASO on the internet, they arrange a room in a flat for as long as you need it--if you arrange it early enough. You live with 10 or 12 people, usually internationals.

There is more choice of area, apartment type, who to live with etc. Gives you more independence.

I did not see university housing as I rented an apartment independently. It was enjoyable although I rented with 2 English girls from my home university so I didn't get to practice very much Spanish at home! However, we were the only English people in the area and there we experienced typical Spanish life in respect to the local bars, shops and other facilities.

Although I had the opportunity to live with a very nice woman who refrained from imposing strict rules upon the constituents of the household, I felt as if I did not have a substantial amount of personal space, which in some cases created a conflict because her motherly instincts took over where my independence began. Living in an apartment/house would also allow me to eat the food that I prefer as well as accomodate guests in a fashion that would suit me.
