Food was paid for with my host family, only extras did I have to pay for. Phone is extremely expensive in CR. One pays each time a local call is placed. The nightlife was cheaper than at home, but not worth what they charged. But since in Puntarenas there is not much to do in the evenings--I had to pay. Travel was quite cheap-especially transportation. The room accomadations were inexpensive, but still more than I expected.

I had expected CR to be very cheap to live but with food I found it cheaper to eat in small resturants than to go to the supermarket. Also to travel, I found in some areas it to be very expensive.

The best way to access your money is through the ATM machine. A family member sent me a check, and I had a very difficult time trying to cash it. I would tell family members if they want to help you out financially, to deposit money directly into your checking account.
