Personal comments
The best way to access your money is through the ATM machine. A family member sent me a check, and I had a very difficult time trying to cash it. I would tell family members if they want to help you out financially, to deposit money directly into your checking account.

Course recommendations
I wish I had been forewarned about some of my professors. One professor absolutely hated Americans, and he made my life miserable. I only needed a few core course requirements to complete my program, and they fell into the category of general studies. I took one class in Art because it was required. The professor expected everyone in his class to be an artist and have an insatiable love for art. I didn't, and I came very close to failing.

Personal comments
I failed every single one of my economics exams, and the teacher never once suggested a tutor to me. I asked for his help in understanding the course, and he told me to read the book. Also, I was unable to use my Spanish/English dictionary on the tests, which at times, made it difficult for me to understand the questions. I enjoyed the final projects, though.

Personal recommendation
Don't just take the literature courses. Be brave and check out some of the regular classes like science, math, and fine arts. You might be the only international student in the class, but you'll get a better appreciation for university life.

I came to Costa Rica with an intermediate level of Spanish speaking ability. I needed the practice and the interaction with locals, and I definitely got that.

I filled out a questionaire about my likes and dislikes, and they matched me with a family. Transportation to the university was a bit difficult, but that was my only complaint.

Tortuguero was excellent. I spent a weekend there for my birthday. It was like being right in the middle of the rain forest.
