Well, my portuguese was already pretty good before arriving in Sao Paulo. I then spent several months studying advanced language skills with a private tutor, seperate from the larger beginner and intermediate levels.

Naturally, learning a new language was a hard job. Anyhow, thanks to the excellent language cources, the most helpful Brasilians, and my knowlendge in Spanish, I learned Portuguese quickly and efficiently.
