I spoke italian before to leave for Italy but people are very kind and they try to understand you if you don't speak italian.

Generally a good idea to pick up basic knowledge of the language you will be instructed in, however, you learn very quickly when there is a need to and the daily reinforcement of hearing the language spoken is a great help.
