fortunally at the university everybody speaks english, some professors will give you the change to write your exams in english

italian don't speak english so a basic knowledge of italian could help you. By the way at the university you have no problem.

Generally a good idea to pick up basic knowledge of the language you will be instructed in, however, you learn very quickly when there is a need to and the daily reinforcement of hearing the language spoken is a great help.
