Housing is very expensive in Bologna, especially if you live in a single room, like I did. Food is cheaper in Italy and better quality. To use the phone always cost more money than at home because you are charged by the minute. Travel is cheaper because everyone usually travels by train or bus.

Personal comments
Be tight with your money. It can go really fast in a city like Bologna which has so much stuff to offer. Make a budget and stick to it. Then if you have money left over at the end, take a trip.

Languages
Language of instruction: Italian
Was learning Italian a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your Italian?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: At ease in most situations
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
My Italian was sufficient for dealing with everyday situations before I arrived in Bologna. The longer I spent there the more I learned. The place where I learned more Italian than anywhere else was at home with my roommate since she was Italian. By the end of my stay I could understand and be understood in virtually any situation.

A list of rooms for rent was provided by the University. I used this list to find my room in Bologna. Other housing options are harder to find in Bologna because there city is small and there are many students.
