I bought train tickets to various places while I was in France and had to buy metro/bus tickets regularly. I rarely ever used a phone while there. What I paid in housing would have covered three months of rent at home.

The fact the the level of life is much higher in France and being a foreign student and not a scholarship holder, has made things very expensive as far as the public institutions are concerned.
