Housing
Type of housing: Apartment, then with family.
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
The overall experience of living with a Swiss family enabled me to learn a great deal about the Swiss way of life. I also had the opportunity to speak French at home as well as at University, as the family could not speak English.

Personal comments
Accommodation provided by the University was not acceptable, as the building was very dark and run down, and I was worried about my personal safety. My first room was too expensive at 850 CHF per month, without the cost of meals or a kitchen to cook my own meals in! However I have thoroughly enjoyed living with the Swiss family.

Languages
Language of instruction: French
Was learning French a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your French?
My level before: At ease in most situations
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
Thoroughly enjoyed being surrounded by the French language both socially and academically. My French skills improved rapidly. At first I was worried about the difficulty of the courses at University, but after a short period of time, the language difference is not a barrier at all.

Expenses
Main source of funding:
A private grant
Other sources of funding:
Family
An ERASMUS grant
Work opportunities:
It was not legal for me to work
Personal spending habits
At first I didn't have a kitchen, so I was forced to eat out, which is expensive. I spend less on nightlife, as I spent lots of time in the mountains, which only costs the price of the train or petrol contributions in the car.
