I wish I had known...
i wish i had known more about limoges before i left. we were not really given much information about our course, our school or even about the town. we were given minimum information regarding rewuirements we needed to fulfill when we got here.

unilim is actually a good university. one just needs to get use to the french school system because it's very different especially if you were raised with an educatinoal system that is similar to the United States. Know what you want to study even before you leave for limoges (i guess the problem for us was that the website before wasn't updated yet so it was difficult).

just know what you want to study in limoges. get all the courses that you think are related to your course. the international office is helpful enough. don't feel pressured to take the french language courses even if they tell you it's required. you won't be able to meet local students, only international students. try to get a host family to adopt you because they can show you around limoges and make your stay better. meeting international students in limoges is easy because there are alot of them here. going to limoges by train is easy but if you have so many luggage, go for the plane. don't get taxis because they are expensive, just get a one month bus pass if you think its necessary. lastly, go to local events to feel french life and make use of the free services that are available for students here like discount cards for plays, movies or for buying books and even the public library card. i found the last one to be very helpful because they have loads of books you can borrow as well as videos, cds and dvds :)

i think that i have in some ways improved. oftentimes, i think that it is not so obvious but when i start speaking with other local or international students, i find that i am no longer stuttering when i speak and that i more or less comprehend what they are saying. it also helped that i always listen to the radio to practice my hearing and that i borrow pocketbooks to practice my comprehension and reading. i think when it comes down to it, if you really want to learn and understand a culture, you have to be hardworking and courageous enough to tackle obstacles.

Academic
Course recommendations
if you're a foreign student studying in unilim, i suggest that you talk with your adviser back home if there is a need for you to take french language classes. they tell us here that it is required but it really depends on what subjects you're required to take. I don't suggest taking the extra french classes because it's pretty worthless and it does not really help in improving your french. the best way is still to mingle with the local students and that is by attending your regular courses. (if ever you're not in limoges to take delf) because in my case, it wasn't really clarified clearly what subjects we will be taking. it wes left up to us and that was a bit disorienting.

My University is located in a small and non-developed city in the middle of France. But when I'm in class, it feels like I can achieve everything, the teachers are encouraging and they offer a great and complete cursus in Foreign languages applied in Business.
