Course recommendations
Don't try to take courses that are above your level. Many people took third year courses because they were in their third year at their home university, then found the courses were too difficult. The professors of the smaller courses tended to be more accomodating of international students.

I wish I had known...
I wish I would have found a way to meet a family early in my trip. I met a family in a nearby town towards the end of my time abroad and they helped me a lot.

Take the opportunity to use the train system to travel throughout Europe while you are there! Youth hostels and one-star hotels are inexpensive and give you a place to sleep. Get a good map of your host city so you can find where you want to go. Learn the bus/subway systems to get around.

Personal spending habits
The exchange rate between the franc and the dollar was not very good at the time of my program. Also, housing was very expensive. I travelled more while I was there, so that cost me more money.

The Securité Sociale program in France will pay part of any student's housing, including international students. Check bank rates before choosing a bank in France; most have hidden costs, such as fees to close the account.

Taking notes in a lecture type situation was very difficult for me. The instructors based everything off of their notes; there were no textbooks unless it was a literature course. They spoke very fast and said a lot over the course of the lecture.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
I lived in a studio apartment by myself, so French interaction was not common at my home. If I lived with a family, French interaction would have been more present in my daily activities.

The University provided many opportunities for finding accomodations once I arrived in Strasbourg. They also had utility companies present on campus to set up new accomodations.

Except for two or three night clubs, most bars closed early in Strasbourg. Unless you wanted to dance or knew of a private party, there wasn't a lot to do at night in Strasbourg.
