While I was in Utrecht, Monza was renovated and was a great place to go to when the medicine students had parties there. Storm was another great place to go for a good night out with students.
The canals are also great in Utrecht, especially if you are a rower.

Final comments
If you don't mind the rain, the Netherlands has a lot to offer for studies. Utrecht is a miniature version of Amsterdam and is a great place to go for studying. Amsterdam is only half an hour away if you are in need of bigger cultural events.
