Personal social experience
Personal comments
Every Tuesday night was international night at Mick O'Connell's Irish Pub. That was always a wonderful night to see people you did not often see. I particularly liked Filemon Paucis and Hofman in the city center. Also, every Monday night was open mic night at the Oude Potthuis, and I enjoyed performing there as much as possible. Of course, the Dom tower is a great tourist spot, and there are some nice parks.

Housing
Type of housing: International Student House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: International Student house
Why?
I had my own room, yet I was able to live in the same corridor as five other exchange students from around the world. I was able to meet a fantastic group of people.

Personal comments
The accomodation was located in the city center, very close to my law classes. Besides the great location, I met many international students from Europe and Australia, with whom I will keep in touch. The international student house was ideal to get a truly international experience.

Languages
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
I felt that it was difficult to get a chance to practice the language because everyone spoke perfect English. However, when I got the chance to learn a few phrases, it did not seem to be terribly hard. My girlfriend is Dutch, so she has been able to help me increase my knowledge of the language.

I would just say to make sure you do not eat at fancy restaurants. Also, take second class trains, and do not fly if you do not need to.

Overall
I wish I had known...
I wish that I had taken a Dutch language course before going because it would have made it easier to learn once I was there.

Final comments
I would say to take weekend trips as much as possible because every city is so accessible from Utrecht. If someone says you should go with them on a trip go because it is more fun to be somewhere with other people, and you get a chance to know them better.

Academic
Course recommendations
I wish that there would have been more to choose from in my particular field (international relations). However, the international law courses were quite good.
