Before I came to the Netherlands the University did NOT arrange anything for me. It is VERY HARD to find a place by yourself here (the Dutch wait for rooms for even 2 years on waiting lists)!!! But I was VERY LUCKU - I won the right to rent my room at a room lottery organized by the UvA. And some other people got their places arranged by the coordinators - so in the end it was not THAT bad - but I had been very worried that I wouldn't find anything!

that it RAINS SO MUC HERE!!!!!
get yourself a BIG lock for your bike (and don't get too emotionally attached to it ;-) - it will probably get stolen anyway). Tyre replacement is VERY expensive (more expensive than second hand bikes sometimes!!!

it's HARD to learn Dutch here - because even if you try to speak it, the Dutch reply in English (almost everyone speaks it here - if you don't speak Dutch you can only have problems in the suburbs/poorer districts - where the immigrants live - they do not ALWAYS speak English)

get yourself a DUTCH bank account (they require transfers very often!!!), COPY the books (that costs less than 10% of original copy)
