Recomendaciones de cursos
Political Science at UCC is mainly "European Studies", that means - as the name indicates - a big big emphasis on European topics. If you look around in other departments as well (History, Geography), you will find extremely interesting, sometimes even exotic seminars. The best course I attended: "Migration in Europe" with Mr Piaras McEinri (Geography department). This guy is brilliant!

Well, you just have to know and accept that academic life at UCC is more like in school rather than at a - for example - German university. Another important point: Irish students start their academic life at a age of 17. As a German student you are at least 20 years old when you join them through the Erasmus-programme. The library at UCC is rubbish for a political science student. Incredible! I based my research on the internet (good access in the computer labs) and the Munich library during my X-mas-break.

The Irish (especially the Cork accent) is beautiful but hard to understand at the beginning. It is not that stiff as the British one and not that broad as the American. All in all a good and friendly mixture. Forget about the "th" by the way. No Corkian pronounces it! Since it was kind of difficult to get to know a lot Irish students and I was dealing mostly with other international students (Spanish, Italian, French...), we had to be careful not to adopt each other's mistakes and create a kind of "foreign English". Cork's inhabitants are extremely friendly, especially the elderly. It often happened to me, that an old man or woman just started a pleasant conversation on any topic (e.g. in the supermarket, on my way to UCC etc.), unobtrusive and kind of charming.

Si lo hubiera sabido...
Don't think about home too much. For the first few weeks/months, it can be very hard to get settled if you're always thinking about your friends back home.

Strongly. However, I would have preferred if this university had been in another city. Cork is nice, but I had a lot more fun in Belfast.

When you travel, go places that are off the beaten path. Dublin is fine, but also go to Galway and Belfast. And definitely do the Ring of Kerry.

Life in Ireland is more expensive than in Germany. Taxes on income are down, prices are up. That' the way it is. Nightlife was a little bit cheaper in comparison to the one in Munich. Phone expenses were unreal, since I wanted to stay in touch with my girlfriend and my family and friends.

Keep an eye on the costs for heating and electricity and agree on fixed regulations with your landlord. Normally they don't have seperate electric meter, so sometimes they just estimate the costs, which might be good for their purses but not yours!

I travelled a lot during the weekends (to the continent, around ireland and also the UK) during the first semester. During the second semester i only really travelled during the month of april when there are no classe held in order to "study" for exams. this was definitely more traveling than i would be doing at home so i spent more. also, i generally went out from 4-7 nights a week so you can see why i spent a lot more money in ireland.

Avery interesting 3 years on a warm, safe and friendly small sized campus rich in history. Department of film was very helpful and went above and beyond to provide support. Small lecture sizes. Engaging film and reading list.
