about the poor academic level and mostly that the nationalities stayed in- groupish and that the city life was pretty lame

Stay away. There are nicer places also inside of the Uk or in Europe or in the world. I was pretty disappointed bec I was much looking forward to study abroad but wish i had spent my time more wisely

Final comments
If you actually go there i would advise to join some societies and try to make the most out of it, try to meet rather many people than depending on few, and get the balance right- especially at Essex, more than in other places.

They spoke their own language pretty well if not with much of a passion for it. Other than that campus life also was dominated by Greek which I do not speek
