Electricity is rather expensive. Go on the trips organised by the International Office of Melbourne Uni. Their trips are very good and the cheapest you can find.

Be active and take part in all social events that are offered. That is the best way to make new friends.
The university expects you to be active and initiative, but they also provide very good orientation services.
Victoria is a beautiful state. See at least Wilsons Promontory!

Personal comments
I stayed at University City Apartments (UCA) which was very expensive. It is really easy to find nice and cheap accommodation in Melbourne so don't worry about finding a place to live beforehand.
