I wish I had known...
The program hosts approximately 35-40 American students each year, and we really only work with one another academically. I wish there had been more opportunity to interact with international students. We were obviously separated from other international students, and this made it more difficult to know any of them.

Oxford is stunning; St. Anne's is one of the newer colleges, and while it does not have the history of some, it provided adequate accomodations. See as much of Oxford and its other colleges as possible-- don't just stay at St. Anne's!

I had wanted to study abroad, but did not feel a semester program was right for me. Attending a summer study abroad program was perfect for me. It definitely strengthened my academics, and it gave me more independence than I had ever known before. The experience was life-changing for me, and I recommend it to anyone who has a great interest in English history and literature. You must be willing to work, but the work pays off. Overall, Oxford was a beautiful and welcoming city. I cannot wait to go back to the country I now consider a part of me.

I wish I had taken the cost into consideration. The UK is incredibly expensive even for basic things like groceries.

Make sure you try all avenues to find funding; it's especially difficult when studying a humanities subject, but not impossible.

The UK is great for easy travel. Trains and buses are generally on schedule, clean, and easy to use. Beware of waiting politely in line everywhere. If opening a bank account make sure you have a letter from your university stating that you are a full-time student, otherwise you will be turned away.

Be sure there is a tutor who focuses on a topic of interest to you and that this tutor will be available to work with you. There are no "courses" as there are in American universities and I cannot have imagined my experience had I been forced to work in a subject area that didn't interest me.

Studying in England can be a very rewarding experience, especially since universities like Oxford attract students from all around the world. Don't limit yourself to associating with people who only speak your language, had I done that, I would have missed out on an integral part of the experience - meeting people from a variety of cultures. Also, if you intend to travel, be sure to have a lot of money saved up, especially if the exchange rate is not working in your favor. Be sure to book rooms in hostels before travelling because during winter break, nearly all students in Europe are traveling as well. Always travel with your own towel as many hostels do not provide them.

I think the most difficult experience is realized upon RE-entry back into your home country...somehow, everything seems dramatically different, yet unchanged.

Oriel College was a fantastic introduction to the larger network that is Oxford University. The instructors were great and I'd highly recommend the university in terms of facilities/location.

Bring a first aid kit and lots of your favorite (familiar) headache/stomach-ache remedies! The names of meds will throw you for a loop, especially if you catch a cold in old Blighty!

Université pour les étudiants ambitieux
Debbie K

Overall
