Academic Resources & Teachers
Margaret K
Denmark, Graduate
, 2019
Overall
Variety of courses to choose your career path, awesome teachers, fully equipped library and staff who were ready to help. Interaction with foreign students was good. But the local danish students were not friendly or accommodative . if you are a foreign student and especially more so from Africa, was hell of a place to be. Being black and in a class of 99 % white students you were left alone, there was no one to talk to, rest of students would re-group and leave you alone. if you don't impose yourself into a group you would be left alone and especially the group assignments .

Pros
Beautiful environment for study
Cons
Locals not friendly, teachers should encourage the locals to accommodate the foreign students so that they feel a sense of belonging.

Housing
Type of housing: Dormitory
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Dormitory again
Why?
The dorm was very close to the seaside and just a 15 min walk from university. There were always people around from my course.

The dorm itself was quite old, maybe even lousy. But the experience of living very close with all my exchange friends was great!

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
It provides you with much better conditions, and besides sometimes you need to concentrate n your studies and that`s pretty hard with like 20 people living on your floor.

Academic
Course recommendations
There was no choice of courses possible, it was a complete Erasmus curriculum. The only choice that was given was between an extra English grammar class and a class about Danish society and economy.

I wish I had known...
The language, and lot more about Danish culture, traditions and habits. You will see that it is quite different from what most people in other parts of the world are used to.

If you do not have very high expectations, if you like beautiful landscapes and quiet places where everyone knows each other, then you should give it a try.

Most of the Danish people speak good English, but unfortunately are not that talkative. My advice is think before you speak, think before you do something in front of those opinionated family-driven individuals.

I have to admit that some students, especially from the US, were disappointed about the academic life. Maybe it´s better to come at an early time of your studies, so the courses mean some progress to your academic knowledge. For meeting people from all over the world, I highly recommend Sonderborg.

No matter what time you are going, always bring a rain jacket! Cheap food can be bought across the border, in Germany. There are always students with cars who will be happy to take you on a shopping tour... I highly recommend travelling, not only within Denmark but also to other Scandinavian countries.
